Reishi, the fruiting body of the fungus *Ganoderma lucidum* (and closely related species within the genus *Ganoderma*), occupies a distinctive position among medicinal mushrooms. It has long been valued in East Asian traditions and continues to attract scientific attention for its complex array of naturally occurring bioactive compounds. The following synthesizes key observations about its chemistry, cultural history, practical preparation, and the findings of clinical trials into a coherent academic overview.


Distinctive Morphology and Cultural Recognition

Reishi is immediately recognizable by its glossy, reddish-brown to lacquer-like cap, a morphological feature that has contributed to its status as one of the most visually distinctive mushrooms. This appearance, combined with its relative scarcity in the wild, helped elevate it within traditional East Asian cultures, where it became associated with notions of longevity, physiological balance, and vitality. For centuries it was regarded as a prized rather than commonplace organism; its uncommon occurrence reinforced symbolic associations with rarity and elevated status.


Bioactive Constituents

Modern analyzes confirm that Reishi contains hundreds of naturally occurring compounds. Two classes have received particular scrutiny: polysaccharides (especially β-glucans and related complex carbohydrates) and triterpenes (including ganoderic acids and related lanostane-type structures). These constituents, along with various antioxidants, form the primary focus of ongoing research aimed at clarifying their potential roles in human physiology. Investigators continue to examine structure-activity relationships, bioavailability, and mechanisms of action, reflecting the scientific community's sustained interest in the organism's chemical complexity.


The presence of these compounds helps explain why Reishi has remained an object of both traditional esteem and laboratory investigation. While the precise physiological significance of individual molecules or synergistic mixtures is still being elucidated, the sheer diversity of secondary metabolites accounts for much of the contemporary research activity surrounding the mushroom.


Historical Context

Documentary and ethnobotanical evidence places Reishi within East Asian materia medica for several hundred years at least. Its scarcity in natural habitats contributed to its reputation as a substance linked to longevity and systemic balance. Traditional frameworks did not isolate single molecular entities; rather, they regarded the fungus holistically as a tonic associated with vitality. This cultural valuation predates modern phytochemical characterization yet aligns with the later discovery of its rich complement of polysaccharides, triterpenes, and antioxidant constituents.


Contemporary Preparation and Consumption

Unlike many culinary mushrooms, Reishi is rarely consumed in its fresh form. Its naturally bitter taste renders direct eating unpalatable for most users. Instead, it is customarily processed into tea, powdered preparations, or concentrated extracts. These forms allow the extraction or concentration of the water- or solvent-soluble fractions that contain the polysaccharides and triterpenes of interest while mitigating the organoleptic drawbacks of the raw fruiting body. Such processing methods reflect both practical adaptation to the mushroom's chemistry and continuity with traditional modes of administration.


Clinical Trial Evidence

A growing body of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews has examined the effects of *G. lucidum* preparations in humans, although methodological quality, sample sizes, dosing regimens, and extract standardization vary considerably.


In oncology, a Cochrane systematic review identified five RCTs involving 373 participants, predominantly patients with advanced lung cancer or mixed cancer diagnoses. Meta-analysis indicated that patients receiving *G. lucidum* extract in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiotherapy were more likely to achieve a positive tumor response than those receiving conventional therapy alone (RR 1.50; 95% CI 0.90–2.51). Concurrent modest increases in the percentages of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T-lymphocytes were observed. However, the review found insufficient evidence to support *G. lucidum* as first-line cancer treatment, and data on long-term survival remain inconclusive. The extract was generally well tolerated, with only infrequent minor adverse events reported.


A more recent GRADE-assessed systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 RCTs (971 participants) evaluating *G. lucidum* supplementation (doses ranging from 200 to 11,200 mg/day over 1–24 weeks) reported statistically significant reductions in body-mass index (WMD −0.43 kg/m²), serum creatinine, and heart rate, together with an increase in glutathione peroxidase activity. No consistent significant effects were found on blood pressure, lipid profiles, fasting glucose, inflammatory markers, or liver enzymes. The certainty of evidence was rated very low across outcomes, reflecting heterogeneity, risk of bias, and imprecision. Subgroup analyzes suggested greater effects at lower doses (<1,400 mg/day) or in younger participants.


Specific polysaccharide extracts have been studied in other contexts. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a standardized *G. lucidum* polysaccharide preparation (Ganopoly) in 132 patients with neurasthenia demonstrated significant improvements in Clinical Global Impression severity scores and sense of fatigue after eight weeks compared with placebo. Another randomized, double-blind trial of β-1,3;1,6-D-glucan derived from *G. lucidum* in healthy adults showed enhancements in CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T-lymphocyte populations, natural-killer cell counts, and serum immunoglobulin A relative to placebo, without adverse effects on hepatic or renal function markers.


An earlier randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study of a triterpenoid- and polysaccharide-peptide-enriched preparation in healthy volunteers reported improvements in total antioxidant capacity and activities of antioxidant enzymes after six months of supplementation. In contrast, a rigorous double-blind RCT in individuals with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome found no significant effect of *G. lucidum* on HbA1c or fasting plasma glucose over 16 weeks.


Collectively, these trials indicate that certain *G. lucidum* preparations may exert modest immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and adjunctive effects under specific conditions, while evidence for robust clinical benefit in metabolic or oncologic endpoints remains limited and of generally low certainty. Variation in extract composition (spore powder versus fruiting-body extracts, polysaccharide versus triterpene enrichment) further complicates direct comparisons across studies.


### Synthesis and Ongoing Inquiry

The enduring fascination with Reishi rests on the convergence of three factors: a distinctive morphology that made it culturally salient, a long history of association with longevity and balance in East Asian traditions, and a complex chemical profile that continues to invite scientific analysis. Clinical evidence to date supports cautious interest in its immunomodulatory and antioxidant potential while underscoring the need for larger, better-standardized, and longer-duration trials. Researchers persist in mapping the roles of its polysaccharides, triterpenes, and antioxidants, seeking a clearer understanding of how these constituents may interact with human physiology. At the same time, practical use remains oriented toward processed forms—tea, powder, and extract—rather than fresh consumption.


In sum, Reishi exemplifies an organism whose cultural prestige and biochemical richness have mutually reinforced one another across centuries. Its study bridges ethnobotany, natural-products chemistry, clinical investigation, and the practical traditions of preparation that have allowed its use to persist into the present day. Further rigorous investigation of standardized preparations will continue to refine scientific appreciation of an organism long regarded as extraordinary.

 

The Lacquered Underworld: Reishi, Mycelial Hauntings, and the Unfinished Alchemy of Philippine Art

I once stood in a dimly lit provincial museum storage room in northern Luzon, the air thick with the scent of old hardwood and insecticide, holding a small, dusty bracket fungus that an Ifugao elder had once used as a household talisman. It was not labeled. The accession card simply read "decorative fungus, origin unknown." I turned it over in my hands and felt the same glossy, reddish-brown sheen that East Asian texts have praised for centuries as the mark of *lingzhi*—the spirit mushroom, the one that promises longevity yet demands bitterness as the price of entry. In that moment the object refused every clean category I had been trained to impose: specimen, souvenir, medicine, decoration, relic. It was all of them and none. This is the precise condition from which the present curatorial frame begins.¹


As an art practitioner who has spent years gatekeeping institutional exhibitions and as a cultural worker who has sat through too many funding panels that still ask whether "indigenous knowledge" can be "validated," I approach Reishi—*Ganoderma lucidum* and its Philippine cousins—not as an exotic prop but as a conceptual and material co-conspirator. The mushroom's premises are by now familiar: it contains hundreds of naturally occurring compounds (polysaccharides, triterpenes, antioxidants); its scarcity once conferred associations with longevity, balance, and vitality in East Asian traditions; it is rarely eaten fresh because of its bitterness and is instead prepared as tea, powder, or extract; clinical trials yield modest, often low-certainty signals of immunomodulation and antioxidant activity while remaining insufficient as first-line therapy.² These facts are not the endpoint. They are the raw substrate that Philippine artistic and ethnomycological practices metabolize into something far more unruly.


The alternative reading I wish to disconfirm on its merits and premise is the tidy dualism still circulating in both scientific and museological circles: either Reishi is a "promising bioactive resource" awaiting full pharmaceutical capture, or it is a picturesque element of "folk belief" that can be tastefully displayed beside woven baskets and ancestral photographs. Both positions share the same colonial metabolism. They extract, stabilize, and display. They refuse the mushroom's own insistence on process, reciprocity, and unfinished transformation. The pharmaceutical reading flattens relational efficacy into measurable biomarkers whose GRADE certainty is repeatedly rated “very low.” The folkloric reading aestheticizes indigenous protocols—prayers before collection, kissing the ground, requests for permission from residing spirits—into heritage spectacle while ignoring the living political economy of knowledge extinction.³ Neither can account for the glossy surface that continues to fruit from decay, nor for the mycelial networks that remain largely invisible yet generate the visible body.


Humor is necessary here, because the absurdity is structural. Imagine a funding application that proposes an exhibition of *Ganoderma* fruiting bodies under the title “Mushroom of Immortality: East Meets West in the Tropics.” The panel will ask for impact metrics, visitor numbers, and a clear narrative arc from "traditional use" to "contemporary relevance." What they will not ask is whether the mushroom itself consents to be framed, or whether the bitterness of its chemistry might be the most honest critique of the entire institutional apparatus. I have sat on such panels. I have also written the rejection letters. The irony is not lost on me: the gatekeeper is herself entangled in the very extractive logic she critiques. This essay, and the conceptual exhibition it frames, is therefore an act of partial refusal—an attempt to keep the object slightly out of reach, still bitter, still unfinished.


Philippine indigenous communities have long recognized related *Ganoderma* species as medicine, house decoration, and ritual participants. Among Aeta, Bugkalot, and Ifugao groups, collection is preceded by protocols of respect that restore reciprocity where modern science risks unilateral taking.⁴ These practices do not "validate" the clinical literature; they expose its epistemic limits. When a randomized trial reports modest elevations in CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T-lymphocytes or increases in glutathione peroxidase, it is performing a translation—sometimes elegant, often crude—of an older relational efficacy into the language of the laboratory. The low certainty of many outcomes is not a failure of the mushroom; it is a symptom of the mismatch between standardized extract and living, place-based knowledge.⁵


Anecdotally, I once watched a young Cordilleran artist carefully glue thin slices of a dried *Ganoderma* bracket onto a panel of salvaged narra wood. She worked in silence for nearly an hour. When I asked what she was making, she replied, without looking up, "A map of what we are not allowed to say out loud." The piece was later rejected by a Manila gallery for being "too ethnographic." The rejection letter praised its "material sensitivity" while requesting something more "universally legible." Universality, in this context, remains a code for the removal of local spirits. The lacquered surface of the fungus—the very quality that once made it recognizable and valuable across East Asia—became, in the gallery's eyes, an obstacle to clean circulation.


Esoterically, the mycelial network offers a living diagram of the archipelagic imaginary and of the underground persistence of knowledge under successive regimes of erasure. The fruiting body is only the temporary, visible expression of a vast subterranean connectivity. Philippine art has long encoded similar cosmologies: the tree that links upper and underworlds, the serpent that moves between realms, the fairy who appears only when reciprocity is observed. Reishi's capacity to emerge from decaying wood—life arising from decomposition—resonates with regenerative philosophies in which death and vitality interpenetrate. Longevity, in this reading, is not individual immortality but cultural and ecological endurance: the persistence of ethnomycological knowledge against extinction pressures, the capacity of art to metabolize historical violence into form.


The clinical literature's cautious findings—immunomodulation without first-line efficacy, antioxidant signals amid methodological heterogeneity—mirror the incomplete yet generative status of decolonial aesthetics. Both are partial translations that nevertheless open new circuits of value. The alternative of pure scientific capture or pure folkloric display collapses under the weight of its own premises: it cannot metabolize bitterness, it cannot honor the invisible network, and it cannot tolerate the object that continues to fruit after the exhibition has closed.


This curatorial frame therefore refuses the clean narrative arc. It proposes instead an exhibition logic of unfinished alchemy: objects that remain slightly toxic to easy consumption, labels that admit uncertainty, and a visitor experience that ends not with resolution but with the lingering aftertaste of something bitter and still alive.


Curatorial Narrative Critiquing  


The critique must begin with the institutional body itself. Contemporary Philippine art institutions—museums, biennales, funding bodies—have perfected the art of selective indigeneity. They celebrate the surface of traditional knowledge while carefully containing its political and epistemological force. When *Ganoderma* appears in such spaces, it is usually as a picturesque accent: a dried bracket fungus placed beside a weaving, a wall text that gestures toward "ancestral wisdom," a carefully lit vitrine that freezes reciprocity into heritage. The critique is not that these gestures are entirely empty; it is that they perform a controlled metabolism in which the mushroom's bitterness is sweetened into legibility and its mycelial politics are reduced to aesthetic texture.


Consider the recurrent curatorial move of pairing "Eastern" medicinal mushrooms with "Western" scientific validation. The wall text will note the clinical trials, the modest immunomodulatory effects, the ongoing research into polysaccharides and triterpenes. This is presented as progressive hybridity. In reality it reproduces a hierarchical translation: indigenous and East Asian knowledges gain legitimacy only insofar as they can be rendered into the language of the randomized controlled trial. The Cochrane review's conclusion—that evidence is insufficient for first-line cancer treatment—becomes, in the gallery, a polite footnote rather than a structural indictment of the demand for pharmaceutical-grade proof.⁶ The low GRADE certainty of recent meta-analyses is rarely allowed to destabilize the exhibition's claim to relevance.⁷


A parallel critique must be leveled at the market. The global wellness industry has already begun to absorb Reishi into the same circulatory system that once extracted Philippine hardwoods and now extracts Philippine "wellness experiences." Glossy packaging, standardized extracts, and influencer endorsements perform the same alchemy that the mushroom itself requires—transmuting bitterness into consumable product—but without the reciprocal protocols that indigenous collectors still observe. The cultural worker who collaborates with such industries risks becoming a boutique translator of the sacred into the marketable. Irony is unavoidable: the very qualities that once made the fungus rare and spiritually charged—its scarcity, its bitterness, its association with longevity—are now mass-produced selling points.


Yet the critique cannot remain purely external. As an art practitioner gatekeeper I have myself authorized exhibitions that aestheticized indigenous fungal knowledge while remaining silent on the land conflicts and knowledge theft that threaten its continuity. The institutional desire for "decolonial" programming often stops at the level of representation. It rarely extends to returning decision-making power, revising acquisition policies, or accepting that some knowledge may refuse display altogether. The mushroom's insistence on process rather than product exposes this limit with particular clarity. A fruiting body is temporary; the network is ongoing. An exhibition that treats the fungus as a finished object betrays the very ontology it claims to honor.


There is also a gendered and spiritual dimension that often softens institutional critique. The babaylan and other mediatorial figures historically mediated between human and non-human worlds, including the fungal. Contemporary exhibitions that invoke "feminine" or "spiritual" aspects of nature risk reducing these complex roles to soft-focus symbolism. The protocols of permission before collection are not quaint customs; they are ethical technologies that refuse the extractive gaze. When a museum label translates them into "respect for nature," it performs a secularization that empties the practice of its force.


The most pointed critique, however, concerns time. Institutional exhibitions operate on the temporality of the project cycle: research, installation, opening, de-installation, report. Mycelial time is otherwise. It works through decay, seasons, and generational transmission. An exhibition that claims to engage Reishi while remaining bound to the project cycle is already in contradiction with its material. The unfinished alchemy I propose is therefore not a romantic gesture; it is a structural demand that institutions accept incomplete closure, lingering toxicity, and the possibility that the most important work may occur after the lights are turned off and the visitors have gone home.


Expanded Summative  


The preceding frames and critiques converge on a single, stubborn claim: Reishi, understood through its chemistry, history, clinical evidence, and Philippine ethnomycological and artistic afterlives, offers a living model for an unfinished, reciprocal, and critically bitter aesthetics. The summative task is to expand this claim without resolving it.


First, the material and chemical premises remain foundational. The glossy reddish-brown cap, the hundreds of naturally occurring compounds, the necessity of preparation that transforms bitterness into accessibility—these are not decorative details. They are the conditions of possibility for any serious engagement. Clinical literature, from the 2016 Cochrane review on cancer adjunct use to the 2025 GRADE-assessed meta-analysis of seventeen randomized trials, consistently reports modest effects alongside significant methodological limitations.⁸ Immunomodulatory signals appear; first-line efficacy does not. Antioxidant markers rise in some studies; cardiometabolic endpoints remain largely unchanged. This pattern of partial translation is itself instructive. It demonstrates both the reach and the limit of laboratory capture.


Second, the Philippine ethnomycological record expands the frame beyond East Asian prestige. Indigenous communities across Luzon and beyond have long recognized related *Ganoderma* species as medicine, decoration, and ritual participants. Protocols of permission and reciprocity precede collection. These practices do not require clinical validation to possess strength; rather, they expose the colonial demand for such validation as itself a form of epistemic violence. Recent Philippine laboratory work on local strains and their synergistic effects against leukemia cells further complicates any simple North–South hierarchy of knowledge production.⁹


Third, Philippine artistic practices metabolize these materials and knowledge into forms that resist clean categorization. From Cordilleran woodcarving traditions that already understood polished surfaces as charged, to contemporary artists who incorporate dried fungal bodies, leaf matter, and regenerative motifs, the visual and material culture of the archipelago has long negotiated the visible and the subterranean. The mycelial network supplies a living diagram for archipelagic connectivity, for the underground persistence of knowledge, and for cosmologies in which upper and underworlds remain linked through process rather than fixed hierarchy.


Fourth, the philosophical and esoteric dimensions refuse both romantic essentialism and pure instrumentalism. Longevity is re-read as cultural and ecological endurance rather than individual immortality. Bitterness becomes an ethical and aesthetic prerequisite rather than a defect to be overcome. Reciprocity is restored as the condition of legitimate knowledge rather than an optional cultural sensitivity. The unfinished character of both clinical evidence and decolonial aesthetics is not a temporary embarrassment; it is the honest condition of the work.


Finally, the institutional and market critique remains necessary. Gatekeeping practices, funding logics, and exhibition temporalities continue to favor resolution, legibility, and extractive translation. The mushroom’s own biology—temporary fruiting body, enduring network, emergence from decay—offers a structural counter-model. An aesthetics adequate to this model would accept incomplete closure, lingering toxicity, and the possibility that the most vital processes remain largely invisible.


The summative position is therefore neither celebration nor rejection. It is a sustained, critical, and reciprocal attention to an organism that continues to fruit after every attempt to stabilize it. The lacquered underworld remains open.


In-Depth Conclusion and Relation


The essay has moved from the chemical and clinical premises of Reishi through Philippine ethnomycological and artistic practices into a sustained critique of institutional and market metabolisms. What remains is the relation itself: the ongoing, unfinished alchemy in which bitterness is not eliminated but metabolized, in which the glossy surface does not resolve into pure commodity or pure symbol, and in which the mycelial network continues to generate possibility beneath every temporary fruiting body. As art practitioner and cultural worker, I return to the storage-room object with which I began. It is still unlabeled. It is still slightly toxic to easy display. It is still, in the most precise sense, alive to the work that remains.

A multidisciplinary Filipino artist, poet, researcher, and cultural worker whose practice spans painting, printmaking, photography, installation, and writing. He is deeply rooted in cultural memory, postcolonial critique, and in bridging creative practice with scholarly infrastructure—building counter-archives, annotating speculative poetry like Southeast Asian manuscripts, and fostering regional solidarity through ethical art collaboration.

 

He has been active in the Philippine art scene since the late 1990s and has worked with galleries, museums, artist-run spaces, and international cultural organizations.

His practice appears to represent several interconnected concerns:  

Cultural work as artistic practice. Roldan has argued that the labor of curating, organizing exhibitions, teaching, documentation, and cultural administration should be understood as creative work rather than merely support work. This perspective has been reflected in his writings and exhibitions.

Social and political engagement. His artworks frequently address politics, religion, faith, denial, courage, social inequality, and the everyday experiences of Filipinos. He has stated that he draws inspiration from Filipino cultural practices while approaching painting, printmaking, and installation from a conceptual perspective.
Printmaking and conceptual art. Roldan is particularly recognized for his printmaking, with works shown internationally, including exhibitions in Japan and France. His practice also encompasses painting, photography, installation, and curatorial research.
International cultural exchange. A significant milestone in his career was receiving an Asian Cultural Council fellowship in 2003, which enabled him to undertake research and create work in the United States while engaging with artists and curators internationally.

More broadly, Roldan's work represents an attempt to bridge artistic production, curatorial practice, scholarship, and cultural activism . His writings often emphasize postcolonial discourse, cultural memory, and the ethics of artistic collaboration, positioning the artist not only as a maker of objects but also as a builder of cultural infrastructure.

In the Philippine contemporary art context, he can be understood as representing the figure of the artist-curator-cultural worker —someone who contributes both through making artworks and through developing exhibitions, mentoring artists, and fostering institutional and independent cultural initiatives.
