The Filipino Reddit Humour
Reddit’s transparency report (July–December 2025) showed that the NBI and PNP sent 12 requests asking Reddit to delete 74 posts. Those posts were about accusations of corruption against government officials and other public figures.
Reddit’s reply was basically: “No. These are just people criticizing public figures and talking about current events. That doesn’t break our rules.” So zero posts were taken down.
At the same time, the government (through the CICC) is telling Reddit and Discord: “Open a physical office in the Philippines and appoint a local representative, or we will restrict/block you.” Discord already got partially blocked on some networks. Reddit got a temporary extension after promising to cooperate and set up local presence.
In plain Taglish terms
Gobyerno: “Burahin n’yo ‘yang mga post tungkol sa korapsyon!”
Reddit: “Hindi. Criticism lang ‘yan ng public officials.”
Gobyerno: “Okay fine… magtayo kayo ng office dito o block namin kayo.”
Parang toxic ex na hindi makamove on. Hindi sila makadelete ng chat history, kaya gusto nila kontrolin yung app mismo.
Current Filipino humour angle
This is peak 2026 Pinoy internet humour material:
- “Kahit Reddit na, pinapasok pa rin ng gobyerno. Parang barangay tanod na gusto maging Reddit mod.”
- “NBI/PNP: ‘Report this post for corruption claims.’ Reddit: ‘Rejected.’ Gobyerno: ‘Mag-open ka ng branch o else.’”
- Classic Filipino coping mechanism: “Corruption posts? Hindi mabura. Platform? Pwede i-block. Consistency 100.”
- Relatable meme energy: After the flood-control / “trillion-peso” scandals and all the protests, people are already used to talking about these things online. Ngayon parang sinasabi ng gobyerno, “Okay lang mag-rant… sa loob ng territory namin.”
Filipinos have long used dark humour and sarcasm as survival skill when dealing with official nonsense (“corruption is the national sport,” “trapo season never ends,” etc.). So this episode fits perfectly into the running joke: the more the state tries to control the conversation about itself, the funnier (and more telling) the refusal becomes.
Bottom line in one line:
Reddit said “no” to deleting the corruption talk. The government answered by trying to force the platform to open a local branch. Classic power move… and classic Pinoy meme fuel.

He is a Filipino multidisciplinary visual artist, printmaker, painter, independent curator, researcher, writer, and cultural worker whose practice spans contemporary art, curatorial work, and cultural advocacy. Cultural work as artistic practice. Roldan has argued that the labor of curating, organizing exhibitions, teaching, documentation, and cultural administration should be understood as creative work rather than merely support work. This perspective has been reflected in his writings and exhibitions.
Social and political engagement. His artworks frequently address politics, religion, faith, denial, courage, social inequality, and the everyday experiences of Filipinos. He has stated that he draws inspiration from Filipino cultural practices while approaching painting, printmaking, and installation from a conceptual perspective.Printmaking and conceptual art.
