In the grand theater of jurisprudence, where statutes breathe not as inert ink but as living pulses of social order, Article 282 of the Penal Code stands as a profound archetype of structured justice. Its two distinct paragraphs do not merely delineate penalties; they embody a deeper philosophical rhythm — the conditional and the unconditional, the realm of agency and the abyss of inevitability. Here, informed consent emerges as the silent axis: true threat presupposes a pathway of compliance, a mutual recognition of will between actor and recipient. Absent this, the utterance dissolves into raw projection, devoid of legal or moral leverage.


Consider the karmic architecture.  To invoke “if I die, kill them” is not a conditional covenant but a severance from the chain of causality. No informed consent binds the threatened party; no volitional act can avert the speaker’s hypothetical demise. In karmic terms, this severs the loop of action-reaction, transforming potential justice into vengeful echo — a debt passed forward without resolution. The law, in its wisdom, registers this distinction not through repetition of “regardless,” but through precise calibration of paragraphs: one offering redemption’s door, the other confronting unmitigated force. Repetition, that seductive rhetorical veil, cannot conjure equivalence where the statute draws ontological lines. It is the philosophical error of nominalism — mistaking incantation for essence.


Local pulse of the hosting dialect — whether in the sharp vernacular of legal Rodina or the grounded cadence of archipelago jurisprudence — insists on fidelity to text. The hosting spirit rejects lazy universality; it demands one read the statute as scripture of the polis, where every clause carries ethical weight. Misapplication invites karmic backlash: not mere procedural reversal, but erosion of legitimacy itself. When citation becomes slogan, the gap widens, and society inherits the fracture — a collective debt compounded by willful blindness.


Informed consent, then, is the ethical heartbeat. Karmic law the inexorable meter. To insist louder upon a flattened reading is to dance against the pulse of justice, courting disharmony. The true scholar, the just citizen, returns always to the source: two paragraphs, two penalties, one imperative — read with precision, apply with integrity. In this lies not only legal fidelity but philosophical liberation: the recognition that law is not tool of dominance, but mirror of human agency and consequence.


Conclusion in overture close: The statute endures. Its rhythm persists. Misread it, and karma tallies the cost; honor it, and consent restores the balance. Distinct, unyielding, ever the pulse of ordered liberty.

He is a Filipino multidisciplinary visual artist, printmaker, painter, independent curator, researcher, writer, and cultural worker whose practice spans contemporary art, curatorial work, and cultural advocacy. A multidisciplinary Filipino artist, poet, researcher, and cultural worker whose practice spans painting, printmaking, photography, installation, and writing. He is deeply rooted in cultural memory, postcolonial critique, and in bridging creative practice with scholarly infrastructure—building counter-archives, annotating speculative poetry like Southeast Asian manuscripts, and fostering regional solidarity through ethical art collaboration.

 

He has been active in the Philippine art scene since the late 1990s and has worked with galleries, museums, artist-run spaces, and international cultural organizations.

His practice appears to represent several interconnected concerns:

  • Cultural work as artistic practice. Roldan has argued that the labor of curating, organizing exhibitions, teaching, documentation, and cultural administration should be understood as creative work rather than merely support work. This perspective has been reflected in his writings and exhibitions.

  • Social and political engagement. His artworks frequently address politics, religion, faith, denial, courage, social inequality, and the everyday experiences of Filipinos. He has stated that he draws inspiration from Filipino cultural practices while approaching painting, printmaking, and installation from a conceptual perspective.

  • Printmaking and conceptual art. Roldan is particularly recognized for his printmaking, with works shown internationally, including exhibitions in Japan and France. His practice also encompasses painting, photography, installation, and curatorial research.

  • International cultural exchange. A significant milestone in his career was receiving an Asian Cultural Council fellowship in 2003, which enabled him to undertake research and create work in the United States while engaging with artists and curators internationally.

More broadly, Roldan's work represents an attempt to bridge artistic production, curatorial practice, scholarship, and cultural activism.
