Alvin Villaruel’s Field Activities at SM Megamall Art Center”

09252009

Alvin Villaruel opens a momentous solo exhibit of paintings with “Field Activities” today, September 25, 2009 at 6:30 pm at the SM Megamall Art Center sponsored by the West Gallery. Alvin Villaruel is perhaps one of the most understated contemporary artists in the Philippines today. He has for more than a decade now been exhibiting consistently photorealistic images on canvasses. His images were gathered unconsciously and rendered painterly on large formatted canvasses. His bodies of works are outstanding for a younger artist in his thirties.

An ingenious play of light and perspective are always standard in his works. Even amongst the progression of photorealism in the Philippines with the likes of Nona Garcia, Geraldine Javier, Yasmin Sison, Keiye Miranda, Wire Tuazon and lately painter Eric Sausa, artist Alvin Villaruel has stood strong in works and concepts and have complemented the rich diasporas of Philippine arts in realism. He has enjoyed painting and reveling in the discipline and would always be bringing newer ideas and images in the contemporary art. Quite a distinct challenge for his contemporaries to complement. We are looking at another distinctive Filipino artist in the making. He has brought together a great audience in his works and respect among peers and predecessors. All the artists that were mentioned above were his contemporaries. Alvin Villaruel included has proven themselves well equipped to command respect and accolades of their own.

Alvin Villaruel relates that he has been stalwart in painting full-time and through the years has merited distinctions, awards and full support with his galleries and West Gallery included. He further relates that his father was his motivation to pursue and continue his art to this day. Villaruel has only respect for the people who helped mould his ideas, concepts and painting techniques with the noted artists Fernando Sena, Gerry Tan, Gig de Pio and Roberto Chabet.

Alvin started painting extreme close up and cropped organic forms and images from magazine studies and has steadily through the years now included grander icons of the era, movement, drama, sentimental figures and sometimes the cataclysmic images most remembered. He plays with his colours, light , perspectives and images with virtuosity and finesse all his own. While he played for sometime with installations and in blurring images to suit exploration and techniques in his paintings. Villaruel now comes back stronger and grandiose at the SM Megamall Art Center with his new works in “Field Activities”. Alvin Villaruel says that painting is his life. Maybe that same earthliness and passion would rub of on more Filipino artists and what a field we would see and expect.

Reading past an article written by Christiane de la Paz about Alvin Villaruel, I find again that sincerity, perseverance, tenacity and respect embodies a truer artist. Alvin would make mincemeat of obstacles and find them challenges to excel better in his work. He will always be motivated regardless and painting in simplicity.

Field Activities runs until October 11, 2009. Sponsored by West Gallery located at 48 West Avenue, Quezon City, Philippines. For other details visit at www. westgallery.org. The exhibit was curated by Nilo Ilarde.
