Refining One’s Taste for Coffee

January 29, 2003

We usually start with the day not with the most important task but a minute for coffee…Aaaargh… A perk up for the still drowsy mind from an all night out with a bit of pandesal on the side, of course this wouldn’t be chic executed in drawing.

Coffee drinking had been a habit for the most Filipinos as shops sprouted around the city. It created a social gathering quite unique and here to stay. It became the latest fad and might even emerge as an art form as more Filipinos take to this wondrous drink. Manila boasts of these nightspots of culture.

As one could already summize with the intro to this article, I’m coming to terms with the works of one Kiko Escora, a coffee drinker for sure. His works revolve around the Malate social district and its café/bar habituates. Yep, another friend but a good individual artist that I’ve come to follow in career for the longest time. He has come up with consistent shows in different venues that had upped his standing as a better artist of today.

A strength in skills and technique that comes from true passion secures him in standing. His constant immersion honed his art. It was not an easy feat for this artist who has to struggle quite young. Luckily, it also created a remarkable packaging unique for this generation.

A lifestyle makes an artist and in this case it also makes a valid concept. Thus, the concept created around his Café Series is born. Through Kiko Escora’s exploration of this lifestyle, he created a uniquely Filipino articulation true to an artist form.

A refined Kiko Escora emerges in his latest series shown at the Drawingroom Metrostar Bldg. 1007 Metropolitan Ave., Makati City. It was well grounded and he is truly deserving of his recognitions.

The large formatted works complements his visual liberties and artful figuration to a T. His details begin to emerge as more relax, consistent and progressive. A play with perspective and social etiquette liven up the characters of his charcoal drawings. Simple semiotics complement his technique and subtle contextual meanings also play their part.

The show titled ‘Familiar Strangers’ runs until the 5th of February, 2003 and like a hot cappuccino can be a bit addicting to taste.
