Walking the Road

December 6, 2002

A saying goes along as “A man who walks a well trodden path seldom loses his way for others had gone there before him while one who walks a different one has all the adventures .”

The tribute to one of the finest artists in Contemporary Philippines today, Santiago Bose, at CCP last December 12, 2002 was a mixed blessing as friends commemorated a great man and almost forgot a great artist as his sentiments and contributions remained ignored.

“We hope to reminiscent a friend as what we remember him and not on the fittings of a conformist he never was.”

Santi would have been laughing wherever he is as he sees how the priest who serve mass tried to catechize, amidst praying art personas, about his virtues not virility and contributions in Philippine art. Santi has created a myth and a legend that friends and enemies, alike, would forever wonder “Did Santi ever do that?” To this day I can only marvel at the indefinable Santiago Bose. A known performer to the hilt. Santi is the epitome of an artist prankster with a heart of laughter and life. In this case he would always have the last laugh.

Its sentimental to wish what would have been for it lessens the man we all know, respect, the artist we look up to and one who lived life gregariously and never holding back. We look for what is meaningful of life and our own purpose. We hope it mirrors in others, as a bonus though. Ever affable Satiago Bose has just finished his journey and on to a brand new one(heaven forbid!) while where all still trying to make out this one.

We face a new morning and another dawn never knowing what is in store for us. What we take for granted might suddenly be gone the next day. As we reminisce the loss in parting of one of the staunchest pillars of the art community that is Santiago Bose, we remember what he always stood for. A renowned and great Filipino artist, mentor, confidante, father, partner and friend. The best that a Filipino artist could be is himself, his own anting-anting against the trials of living.

What he leaves with us in his death are memories, his laughter, a brand of humor, jokes, brilliance, simplicity, integrity, kindness, righteousness, his art, his escapades and most of all his humanness. For Santi, as we hope to remember him, always, stood up for all the uniqueness a person and an artist could be. Our regret is that he left too soon but as Santiago Bose was always on the move, we just can never really catch up.
