Recent Work Series

January 2003

The Recent Works Series just concluded last December 31, 2002 to a successful and satisfying launching for the new Kulay Diwa Galleries now headed by independent curator Bobi Valenzuela and gallery owner Bobbit Nolasco. A dynamic duo for the Arts that we would see more through the coming shows of 2003. A major force to contend with for all.

The Series of Four worked as a one of the most visionary exhibitions for the Philippines. It included stalwarts artists already established in their own right alongside the promising young artists in a dynamic aesthetic revelry. This is very much needed as we as audiences are overcome by the lack of proper semantic understanding of Filipino artmaking.

The late Santiago Bose belonged to the Recent Work 3 which marked his very last show. An added honor for the Kulay Diwa Galleries was his full support yet unconsoled by the loss of such a great friend and mentor for the young artists. It is a series that encompassed the essence of being a Contemporary Filipino artist anchored to what he is in society---a thinking and caring humanity.

When we evaluate the merit of this series we collect all the semantics as one cohesive whole. We create this balance of validity and excellence to conclude the success or failure of the show. The more artist and works that the curator includes creates a wider range that could be instrumental or detrimental to the overall concept of the exhibit. Choosing well-established artists could have proven an easier task but to include young artists creates a novel idea far in vision for the renewed art scene.

The visual assembly reaches another unparalleled plane from one of the originator of the acclaimed Yes the Filipino Can! Ang Delatang Pinoy. Bobi V. created another semantic feast for the Filipino viewers. The awareness of the importance and rarity of shows of this scope could open newer levels for all the Filipino artists. With this thrust we would see more of the changes for the better in the Philippine art scene.
