For Better or for Worse

December 1, 2002.

I was quite uneasy to think that I was being led to expect an anti-climatic ending after the Recent Works 3 artists. The third exhibition had offered the bigger artists like stalwart Brenda Fajardo, Alfred Esquillo, Karen Flores, Noel Cuizon, Dindo Llana and the late Santiago Bose who led easily the pack. It was hard to be next in line for that matter and it was a tough combination to follow for any artist show. Like a sequel to its prequel, I was preparing for the worst and to assume it would fall short, hopefully, not too far off. A commiserating speech was already handy and prepared. Yet, I was wrong! Dead wrong! For it was a change in a complete turnabout. It was as if there was no end. What Recent 3 left was hanging on air. It never went down. That Recent Works 4 seems to be another beginning. What was expected to tone down never did. Defying being compared, a different body of paintings spruced forth. The 18 new works demanded attention and attention they got. As if there were no one to hold above. It mocked ruling and identity as works blended with one another creating a cloud that seem to hover over the place. What was created of the space was another world.

Yet, surprisingly none rose above any one to lead the turbulence. Even the steady hands of older artists swayed with the flow of delimitating lines. Blaring tension resonated from all four corners like a marching army. An imminent war declared. Inch by inch, territories gained and lost as pieces fought for the viewers eyes and never quite letting go. Harsh, didactic and demanding were words crying out while a symphony of darks, reds and oranges lost themselves in swarming senses of swirls, shadows and muted images. Tame was a word far from this show of promising painters that seem to hear the same demanding tune. War. Sentiments rang in a dark exchange of semiotics as thick as a storm breaking despite the propitious coming season. An unexpected dramatic climax to a year at close.

The Recent Works series was curated by Bobi Valenzuela and this latest one brings another major coup for the newly re-opened gallery aiming to exhibit works by established and critically recognized artists alongside young and dynamic ones.

The Recent Works 4 selections of contemporary paintings, shown at Kulay Diwa Galleries, located at 25 Lopez Village, Lopez Ave., Sucat, Paranaque City, is something for the art community to see and experience. This new group of 18 artists and their 2-d works are a much awaited culmination for the series of shows brought on by Kulay Diwa Galleries which started mid-2002. Written around dailies as a contemporary series far reaching in vision and concept, the exhibits of four comes to an auspicious ending on December 31, 2002 .
